"TikTok Shop" links will soon become more common on the social media app. According to Bloomberg, the company is testing a new feature that automatically identifies items in videos on the platform and then provides a link to "find similar items on TikTok Shop." A company spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and the feature is more like an early test.
BusinessInsider tested the same feature last November, and we also found videos from September and October last year that contained a "Find similar items on the TikTok store" button. TikTok previously confirmed that it was testing the feature with a small number of users in the United States and the United Kingdom. One user who added a product link to a video was not informed that the link would be used to promote TikTok Shop.Months after TikTokShop launched in the United States, the latest reports have emerged about the experimental feature, which, among other things, allows creators to add product links to their videos. Bloomberg points out that currently, influencers and brands need TikTok's approval to tag products in videos, but the new feature has the potential to extend product links to all videos, which represents a significant expansion of TikTok's e-commerce capabilities as the platform aims to achieve $17.5 billion in U.S. sales by 2024.This isn’t the first time we’ve seen companies using technology to automatically identify products and provide links to purchase. Competing social media platform Pinterest, for example, has a shopping recommendations feature that invites users to "see similar products" on certain posts. Google Lens and the company's recently launched Circle to Search feature also have shopping as a key use case, both of which help people identify items like fashion accessories and provide links to purchase.Bloomberg notes that TikTok has room for improvement in the accuracy of its new tool, noting that when it was used in a video of a woman polishing gemstones, it offered related products like gold rings and manicure materials.
