Samsung's use of titanium on its highest-end Galaxy S24 Ultra shows that it can also use newer materials to attract consumers and stay competitive with Apple. However, titanium comes in different quality grades, and according to the latest teardown (which also involves the use of advanced machinery), Samsung's flagship phone is using lower quality titanium than what Apple used last year.
The Galaxy S24 Ultra uses grade 2 titanium, which is indeed titanium, but it is still inferior to the materials used in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
After putting the Galaxy S24 Ultra through a series of stress and torture tests, YouTuber JerryRigEverything (aka Zach) wanted to know just how much titanium Samsung used. Of course, simple optical surveys weren't enough for the task, so Zack put the flagship machine in the hands of someone who understood and mass-produced the tools to identify a wide range of materials.
The YouTuber came to MOXTEK, a company that makes X-ray equipment for the Mars Perseverance rover. They also built XRF scanners to identify the materials used to make the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Upon inspection, Samsung's $1,299.99 flagship product was found to be made of grade 2 titanium. While XRF scanners can have errors in their readings, the same machine identified the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max’s titanium as Grade 5, highlighting its accuracy.
As for how much titanium the Galaxy S24 Ultra is made of, the body of this high-end Android phone must be melted down to draw a firm conclusion. The device was then placed in a furnace and the plastic holding the titanium in place immediately began to melt. Based on the remaining fragments, we estimate that Samsung used $3 to $5 worth of titanium, but it should be noted that this is just the material cost. The process of casting, forming and molding this material to create a smartphone case is very expensive, but it is still worth knowing.
In comparison, Apple uses more materials, and also uses higher-grade titanium to make the bodies of iPhone15Pro and iPhone15ProMax.
