Apple's Vision Pro App Store did not include some key apps when it launched, such as Netflix, YouTube and Spotify. However, according to a statement provided by Google, a YouTube app may be launched in the future.
YouTube said it was "excited" about the launch of VisionPro and that it already had an app development plan on the company's roadmap, but did not provide a timeline. YouTube’s full statement is below:
We’re excited to see the launch of VisionPro and we’ll support it by ensuring YouTube users have a great experience in Safari. We don't have any concrete plans yet, but can confirm that VisionPro application development is on our roadmap.
YouTube and parent company Google sometimes take years to adopt new Apple features, so it's completely unclear when we'll actually see a YouTube app for the device. Meanwhile, developer Christian Selig created an app called "Juno" for watching YouTube on VisionPro. In addition, you can also watch YouTube videos through the Safari browser.
However, neither Juno nor the web version of YouTube allows VisionPro users to watch 360 and 3D videos on YouTube. This is because the content "was created for devices that are unable to provide a high-quality spatial experience and, in some cases, cause motion discomfort."
There's no word yet on whether YouTube's final app will be compatible with 3D content.
Apple says it's working on supporting WebXR content that will eventually allow YouTube VR videos to be viewed on the web through Safari, but it's still a new standard. WebXR doesn't yet "take full advantage of the functionality, performance, and interactivity of Apple Vision Pro and visionOS," but Apple is contributing to W3C web standards including WebXR.
