The Biden administration on Wednesday named a senior White House aide as director of the new Artificial Intelligence Security Institute, the Associated Press reported. Elizabeth Kelly will lead the Artificial Intelligence Security Institute at the Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology. Kelly, currently an economic policy adviser to President Joe Biden, played an integral role in crafting the executive order signed in late October establishing the institute.
White House National Economic Council Director Lael Brainard said in the announcement that Kelly "developed the president's technology and financial regulatory agenda and worked hard to build a broad coalition of stakeholders."
The newly established institute will play a key role in promoting technological development. By July, it will create "red team" testing standards for major AI developers to ensure systems are safe for consumers and businesses.
The government believes safety testing is necessary to unlock the benefits of the rapidly evolving technology and will create a level of trust for wider adoption of artificial intelligence.
The federal government recently began requiring artificial intelligence companies to test their systems. But so far, the tests lack a common set of standards, which the institute plans to finalize this summer.
Kelly is a graduate of Yale Law School and has also worked at the Obama White House and financial firm Capital One, according to her LinkedIn page.
