Lenovo has made artificial intelligence the most important element of its product and strategic roadmap, such as embedding increasingly sophisticated chatbots and even AIOS in PCs. "In the next two to three years, 70% of devices will be AI-native. I think there is a huge opportunity in the consumer space, but it will be in the high-end space initially. And then you will see these AI capabilities integrated into the rest of our product roadmap," Luca Rossi, executive vice president of Lenovo Group and president of the Intelligent Devices Business Group (IDG), said at a media conference on Wednesday.
Almost all major technology companies around the world are integrating AI models and incorporating AI into their products and services. The most notable trend this year is the integration of advanced artificial intelligence capabilities into the core layers of PCs and smartphones. Microsoft has launched Copilot on computers running Windows 10 and Windows 11. Copilot is a generative artificial intelligence that creates human-like text and other content with just a few sentences of conversation.
Lenovo is promoting the use of AIPC to replace traditional PCs, especially for the large group of consumers who purchased them during the epidemic.
Matthew Zielinski, executive vice president and president of international markets at Lenovo Group, added: "I think in the middle or second half of this year, you will start to see Lenovo working with chip and software partners and retail partners to show the world what you can do with artificial intelligence." He added that the application scenarios of artificial intelligence go beyond what is currently being demonstrated, whether it is a personal assistant or using artificial intelligence to edit photos.
Big tech companies are turning their focus to artificial intelligence because consumers aren't excited about the traditional hardware upgrades that come with new PCs. They may look the same and perhaps have better screens, CPUs, or graphics cards, but those improvements aren't enough to grab consumers' attention. Experts see artificial intelligence as an epochal shift that could spur PC sales. Microsoft calls 2024 the "Year of AIPC."
As technology companies become more powerful in artificial intelligence, PC manufacturers will increasingly adopt "local artificial intelligence" rather than just processing tasks through the cloud. At this year's CES, Lenovo released a Yoga laptop powered by Windows 11, equipped with Lenovo Yoga Creator Zone, a Vincentian native artificial intelligence tool that can run even without an Internet connection.
In addition, Lenovo is increasingly focusing on adding GenAI features unique to its own PCs. For example, Lenovo AINow uses natural language to let users control and change PC display and performance settings, search emails and documents, and even create meeting invitations. The feature will be launched in China in the first half of this year.
"Copilot is one of the many GenAI solutions, and obviously it is the dominant solution today. But we will also have certain GenAI capabilities developed by Lenovo and will be launched first in China." Luca Rossi said.
He said that, at least for now, Lenovo has no plans to charge users for the use of artificial intelligence functions. This will contribute to the rapid popularity of its AIPC products.
