Nvidia made an early bet on artificial intelligence and is now reaping the benefits, as evidenced by its stunning growth over the past year. It all starts with the game's Deep Learning SuperSampling (DLSS), a technology focused on harnessing the power of AI, specifically trained neural networks, to accelerate game performance. Since then, Nvidia has started using TensorCores in all GeForce graphics cards from the RTX series onwards. With the advent of real-time ray tracing technology, there is an urgent need to reclaim as much performance as possible.

Over time, NVIDIA has allowed DLSS to evolve:
Version 2.0 delivers higher image quality while maintaining its performance accelerator status
Version 3.0 adds frame generation capabilities, taking performance to the next level, especially in CPU-intensive games
Version 3.5 focuses on improving the quality of ray tracing with the new light reconstruction feature, which just debuted in Cyberpunk 2077 to critical acclaim
In the final segment of a recent “AI Vision” roundtable hosted by Digital Foundry, Bryan Catanzaro, vice president of applied deep learning research at Nvidia, said he believes a future release of DLSS (perhaps version 10) can address all aspects of rendering through neural AI-based systems.
"I think we're going to increase realism and hopefully reduce the cost of making triple-A environments with more neural rendering," he said. "I think it's going to be a gradual process. The thing about traditional 3D pipelines and game engines is the controllability: you can have an art team making something, and they have a coherent story, locations and everything. You can build a world with these tools."
We will definitely need these tools. I don’t believe that AI will make games in such a way that you just write a paragraph about making a cyberpunk game and out comes a game as good as Cyberpunk 2077. I do think that, let's say in the distant future, DLSS10 will be a completely neural rendering system that interfaces with game engines in different ways, and because of that, it will be more immersive and beautiful.
