LG Display announced today that it will begin mass production of 17-inch foldable OLED panels for notebook computers, indicating that the company has really begun to expand its OLED business for IT equipment. LG Display's 17-inch foldable OLED panel adopts the TandemOLED structure previously used for automotive displays, which greatly improves the service life of IT equipment.

An industry first in 2019, LG Display's TandemOLED embodies its pioneering dual-layer OLED technology, which adds an additional organic light-emitting layer to deliver a brighter screen while efficiently dispersing energy into the OLED components for optimal stability and longer life. The panel's long life is ideal for long-lasting IT equipment such as laptops, monitors and tablets.

The company's breakthrough 17-inch foldable OLED for laptops integrates a special material that minimizes wrinkles in the folded area of the screen. Unlike traditional foldable panels, it enables seamless display and clear picture quality. In addition, the 17-inch foldable OLED adopts an "inward folding" design and can be folded inward easily. The curvature of the folded part is reduced to 3R (radius of curvature is 3 mm), resulting in a slim and seamless screen design that fits tightly together after folding in half. The panel's large 17-inch screen uses QHD+ resolution (2560x1920) and has unlimited contrast unique to OLED technology.

When fully extended, the screen can be used as a 17-inch portable monitor or tablet, with a 4:3 screen ratio for maximum immersion. By adjusting the angle, it can transform into a 12.3-inch laptop with a 3:2 ratio, breaking the boundaries of the device to suit the individual needs of customers.

The screen is also equipped with LG Display’s high-sensitivity touch screen solution, allowing users to complete tasks with a pen or finger. Touch sensors embedded within the panel enhance touch performance, providing a tactile experience similar to writing with your hand.

Meanwhile, LG Display has solidified its technology leadership in the OLED business by expanding its OLED product lineup, including the industry's first mass production of OLED for 13.3-inch foldable laptops as early as 2020, and expanding its product lineup to OLED for 17-inch foldable laptops this year.

An official from LG Display said: "We will continue to strengthen our competitiveness in the OLED business in the IT industry and expand orders based on differentiated technologies such as Tandem OLED and unique folding structure."
