On Sunday, September 24, 2023, Pegatron suspended iPhone assembly work at its factory in Chennai, India, following an incident described as a "fire incident." Pegatron has been renting a factory in Chennai to produce iPhones since 2021 and currently accounts for 10% of Apple's production in India.

A fire incident caused the company to halt assembly on Sunday night, Reuters reported. As a result, Pegatron canceled the first two shifts on Monday.

Unknown sources told Reuters that production was only temporarily halted. However, it is unclear whether Monday's third shift will continue to operate. The extent of damage and the cause of the fire are also unknown. However, there were no casualties as the factory was closed because Sunday was a local holiday.

In addition, Pegatron has been planning to lease a second factory in India to further expand iPhone production scale.

Many of Apple's suppliers have been working to reduce their reliance on China as a single source of production, and Pegatron is one of them. For its part, Pegatronics had to suspend operations in Shanghai and Kunshan in April 2022 due to China's COVID-19 epidemic prevention measures.
