Today, the shortlist for the 2024 World Game Hall of Fame was officially announced, including "Metroid" and several other games. There are 12 shortlists in total this time. In addition to "Metroid", there are also "Asteroids", "Elite", "Guitar Hero", "Mysterious Island", "Neo Pets", "Resident Evil", "SimCity", "Heartbeat Memories", "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater", "Ultimate" and "You Don't Know Jack".

Interested players can participate in the "Players' Choice" poll between March 14 and March 21 to vote for their favorite candidate game. The three games that receive the most public votes will form a voting list and be merged with other lists submitted by members of the International Electoral Advisory Committee. The committee is composed of journalists and academics familiar with the history of video games and their role in society.

The World Gaming Hall of Fame says it selects games based on the following criteria: "iconic status, where the game is widely recognized and remembered; longevity, where the game is not just a fad but has long-term popularity; geographical scope, where the game meets the above criteria on an international scale; and influence, where the game has had a significant impact on the design and development of other games, other forms of entertainment, or popular culture and society."

In 2023, "The Last of Us" and "Wii Sports" were inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame.
