The defendant Xu Yao was sentenced to six years in prison for the crime of dropping dangerous substances and decided to execute the death penalty and deprived of political rights for life.
The Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court found after trial that the defendant Xu Yao had a conflict with the victim Lin due to company management matters, and premeditated to poison the victim Lin's edible items between December 14 and 15, 2020, causing Lin's death from poisoning. Xu Yao also had conflicts with the victims Zhao A and Zhao B due to work reasons. From September to December 2020, Xu Yao poisoned drinks and other items in their offices, causing Zhao A, Zhao B and four other people to be poisoned. At around 18:40 on December 18, 2020, Xu Yao was captured by the public security organs.
The Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court held that the defendant Xu Yao intentionally killed one person, causing the death of one person, and his actions constituted the crime of intentional homicide; he released toxic substances that endangered public safety, causing four people to be poisoned, and his actions constituted the crime of releasing dangerous substances, and he should be punished for several crimes in accordance with the law. The defendant Xu Yao premeditated and intentionally killed people by poisoning and endangered public safety. His criminal motives were extremely despicable, his criminal means were extremely bad, the harmful consequences were extremely serious, and his subjective viciousness was extremely vicious. He should be severely punished in accordance with the law. The court made the above judgment accordingly.

The Shanghai police previously reported: "At about 17:00 on December 17, 2020, the police received a report that a patient Lin (male, 39 years old) was suspected of being poisoned during diagnosis and treatment in a hospital. After receiving the report, the police immediately launched an investigation. After on-site inspection and investigation visits, it was found that Lin's colleague Xu (male, 39 years old) was suspected of committing a major crime. Currently, Xu has been criminally detained by the police in accordance with the law, and relevant investigation work is being further carried out."
