Apple said today that the iOS 17.1 software, due to be released later in October, will reduce iPhone 12 radiation levels. France ordered Apple to stop selling iPhone 12 in September this year and required it to "repair" the device to make it comply with European electromagnetic radiation standards.

Apple said in a support document that it is disabling the out-of-body detection feature, which allows iPhones to emit slightly higher power when they are not being held or in a pocket, to meet regulatory requirements.
Apple said the feature was turned off despite an error during radiation testing by France's Agence Française Nationale des Fréquences, or ANFR, regulatory group.
The test protocol used by ANFR does not take into account the iPhone's in-vivo detection mechanism, which Apple says has been "thoroughly tested and internationally validated as an effective mechanism that meets SAR requirements."
