Another 6.3-magnitude earthquake hits Afghanistan: more than 4,000 people have been killed and injured

According to news on October 11, Afghanistan has experienced many strong earthquakes recently. Just today, there were two strong earthquakes again. China Seismological Network officially determined that at 8:41 Beijing time in Herat Province, Afghanistan (34.55 degrees north latitude, 61.95 degrees east longitude)An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 occurred with a focal depth of 10 kilometersThe epicenter of this earthquake was near Herat, the strong earthquake that occurred on the 7th. This was the third earthquake of magnitude 6 or above to occur in the province within five days.It’s also the strongest one.

Not only that, a few minutes later, at 8:52, another magnitude 5.0 earthquake occurred in Herat Province, Afghanistan (latitude: 34.59°N, longitude: 62.12°E), with the focal depth also being 10 kilometers.

Four days ago, on the 7th of this month, Afghanistan suffered multiple strong earthquakes:

At 14:41 that day, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred in western Afghanistan (latitude: 34.63°N, longitude: 61.93°E), with a focal depth of 14 kilometers;

At 14:49, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake occurred in western Afghanistan (latitude: 34.54°N, longitude: 61.95°E), with a focal depth of 11 kilometers;

At 15:12, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurred in western Afghanistan (latitude: 34.55°N, longitude: 61.88°E), with a focal depth of 11 kilometers;

At 15:40, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake occurred in western Afghanistan (latitude: 34.64°N, longitude: 62.03°E), with a focal depth of 8 kilometers.

As of now,Seismic activity in the region has killed and injured more than 4,000 people.

It is reported that the two strong earthquakes today are the follow-up earthquakes in the earthquake swarm sequence since October 7, and they are alsoShallow earthquakes caused by shallow thrust faults(Afghanistan’s central earthquake zone is located in the Hindu Kush Mountains). The epicenter of this earthquake swarm is very close to Herat, an important town in northwestern Afghanistan.
