Tesla has sold German wireless charging startup Wiferion, which it just acquired in June this year, to PULS, a DIN rail power supplier. However, Tesla will reportedly retain Wiferion engineers. PULS announced the deal via a press release, and the company said it will continue to manufacture, sell and market Wiferion's wireless charging products under a new business unit, PULS Wireless.
Earlier this year, there were reports that Tesla acquired Wiferion, sparking speculation that Musk might enter the wireless charging industry.
Tesla unveiled a new wireless home charging station earlier this year, despite its historical lack of interest in wireless charging.
According to analysis, Tesla’s acquisition and subsequent sale of Wierion is similar to an “acquisition and recruitment” situation. The automaker retained Wiferion's engineering team and sold operations and manufacturing to PULS.
The specific reasons for Tesla's decision are unclear, but speculation suggests that Tesla either already has its own production plans for wireless chargers or is not optimistic about Wiferion's production business.
Despite the sale, industry observers still expect Tesla to announce plans related to wireless charging soon.
