At yesterday's Duocon event, Duolingo announced that it would expand from traditional language courses to math and music teaching. The company said it will continue to use its bite-sized courses, gamification features and a range of characters to help learners improve their skills in both subjects.

Learners will be able to use math and music lessons as if they were different languages, and the lessons will be embedded directly into the app rather than standing on their own. Similar to languages, you can use new classes to keep your streak going, complete quests, and climb the leaderboards.

Initially, the new courses will be available on iOS devices globally in English and Spanish (this isn't the first time the company has prioritized Apple users). For Android users, the company also promises that the courses will be available on a wider scale "soon."

The company hasn't revealed many details about how complex the courses will be, but as far as math courses go, it's likely to stick to the basics. The company says beginners can learn math from the lessons, while those who already have a grasp of math can use the lessons as "additional brain training."

While almost everyone gets a decent math education in school, at least basic courses like arithmetic and geometry, the ability to read musical notation is not universal. Therefore, music classes may be more interesting for adults looking to learn new skills, and in addition to continuing your winning streak in these new classes, the XP upgrade feature works just as well in these subjects.

As Duolingo expands into new areas, will the company add more themes and become more like Khan Academy? This is an interesting question. In response to the question, the company said that for now it is only focusing on these two courses, but "this is just the beginning." Eventually, the company hopes to make it a central app for learning any subject.
