Chinese-owned Bitcoin mining operations in the United States are raising security concerns because of their proximity to important sites and the potential for cyber threats, The New York Times reported.

There are some mining facilities near important places such as the Microsoft data center in Wyoming and the Pentagon Air Force nuclear missile base. U.S. officials worry that China is using these facilities to conduct espionage operations in these locations. These mining activities began after China banned Bitcoin mining in 2021. These individuals sometimes maintain ties to the ruling party or state-owned enterprises, ties that may be hidden through layers of companies.

Texas has become a haven for the China-linked Bitcoin mining industry, and some U.S. states have restrictions, but Texas offers incentives. This could pose a threat to the power grid or critical infrastructure.

A recent report raised new concerns that China could conduct cyberattacks on U.S. infrastructure in the event of a major conflict.
