Epic Games has once again confirmed that they will continue to give away free games through the game store in 2023 and beyond. At UnrealFest 2023, Kyle Billing, director of product and content strategy at Epic Games, mentioned that free game giveaways on the Epic Games Store will continue in 2023 and beyond.
The program is said to remain a major driver in attracting new users and converting them into paying subscribers. According to demos, the initiative has attracted more than 90 million new users so far.
In addition, the introduction mentioned that "Weekly Specials" are the store's first long-term campaign, aiming to introduce content beyond the focus activities. The initiative is open to all content and everyone, and applications can be submitted directly through the Discount Management Tool. These deals will go live every Tuesday and will be featured in multiple premium placements.
Epic will next launch a series of incentive programs to encourage Epic to exclusive launch games and partner games by increasing revenue sharing.
The presentation also discusses store performance optimization. The company's focus starts with optimizing cold boot time and will then look at optimizing the time for system tray recovery. The EGS client's cold start time was reduced from 13 seconds in February to less than 5 seconds in the last test in August this year. In the future, the next phase of work will focus on closing the gap in SysTrayRestore, especially the part of SysTrayRestore to the library. Users will start seeing these optimizations in 2024.
