Nintendo announced its latest quarterly financial results, which showed a sharp decline in revenue and profits. Data show that net sales in the first fiscal quarter of 2025 were 246.6 billion yen, a year-on-year decrease of 46.5%; net profit in the first fiscal quarter was 80.9 billion yen, a year-on-year decrease of 55.3%. In this regard, foreign media pointed out that the main reason is the decline in sales of its flagship product Switch game console.

Specifically, Nintendo sold a total of 2.1 million Switch game consoles this fiscal quarter, a year-on-year decrease of 46%. Nintendo has previously stated that it will announce the next generation device before March 2025.

According to data, Switch has been launched for more than seven years and is the second-highest-selling game console in Nintendo’s history, second only to Nintendo DS. Over its lifetime, Nintendo maintained long-term sales momentum through improved displays and a gaming boom that capitalized on well-known characters such as Mario and Zelda. However, the latest earnings reports show that this effect appears to be fading. Faced with slowing sales of game consoles, Nintendo has also been trying to license its intellectual property for use in movies, theme parks and other fields. But despite this, sales from mobile and intellectual property-related businesses in the latest fiscal quarter still fell nearly 54% year-on-year to 14.7 billion yen.
