Amazon announced today that it will offer drone delivery services in the UK and Italy by the end of 2024. In addition, Amazon will open a third drone delivery location in the United States, following Rockford, California, and College Station, Texas. The company didn't release more specific information about the locations -- it promised to reveal them "in the coming months."
"We are working closely with national regulators, international regulators, and communities in the EU, Italy, the UK and the US to develop this project," the company noted. "Once the feature is live in their location, customers can select drone delivery via a drop-down menu when placing an order, allowing for rapid delivery of products weighing under 5 pounds."
The new areas will be served by MK30 aircraft, a new drone launched at last year’s Delivering the Future event. According to the company, the new drones have twice the range of the previous generation, are quieter and can handle a wider range of weather conditions. The company also said it would integrate drones more directly into its existing network of delivery vehicles, which also includes vans, meaning the drones would operate from the same facilities.
Amazon's stated goal is to deliver 500 million packages by the end of the century - obviously, such numbers require a much larger network. Doing this will require working closely with national and local governments to navigate the regulations associated with this new type of package delivery.
