According to a new report from Unity, 53% of game developers have noticed an increase in bad player behavior over the past year. In addition to survey statistics on developers, the 2023 Multiplayer Game Bad Behavior Report also includes survey responses from 2,522 consumers. The survey's definition of bad behavior includes disruptive gaming, harassment, extremism, cheating, inappropriate content and other conduct.
Players interviewed by the report reported experiencing a variety of bad behavior across multiple game genres over the past year. The top three genres where players encounter bad experiences are FPS first-person shooter games (51%), sports/racing games (49%), and battle royale games (44%). I'm curious why "battle royale games" are mentioned separately. After all, many works in this genre can be classified as first/third-person shooters, and some can be classified as action games.
The genres where players encountered the least bad behavior were card/deck-building games (23%), puzzle games (29%), and adventure/platformers (30%).
According to the report, nearly all consumers surveyed have changed their behavior due to the influence of bad players, such as reporting violations or deliberately avoiding games with bad players.
Unity has come up with some recommendations for developers to combat bad behavior online, including encouraging positive behavior and working together as an industry to reduce bad behavior.
