On October 19, TSMC President Wei Zhejia disclosed at the legal person briefing that,TSMC is expected to mass-produce 2nm process chips in 2025.At present, TSMC has begun mass production of the 3nm process, which was first used and so far only used for Apple's A17 chip. It will be iterated in many different versions in the future.
According to the news,TSMC has formed a new 2nm task team with an unprecedented layout. It will simultaneously sprint for 2nm in two factories in Baoshan, Hsinchu and Kaohsiung, for trial production in 2024 and mass production in 2025.
TSMC's 2nm process will abandon the traditional FinFET transistor process for the first time and turn to GAA all-around gate transistors. Compared with the N3E process, the performance of the same power consumption is improved by 10-15%, and the power consumption is reduced by 25-30% with the same performance, but the transistor density is only increased by 10-20%.
However, the price is also very high. The price of 3nm foundry wafers has increased by US$20,000, and 2nm is expected to further reach US$25,000, equivalent to more than 180,000 yuan.
In addition, Wei Zhejia also disclosed,TSMC's factory in Arizona, USA, plans to start mass production in the first half of 2025, and its factory in Japan is expected to start mass production at the end of 2024.
