Elon Musk said today that X (the predecessor to Twitter) is about to launch two new premium plan tiers, confirming previous reports and information hinted by code. The platform's owners say one of the tiers will cost less than the current cheapest plan of $8 per month, but will not reduce advertising. The other tier will be more expensive and will remove all advertising. The current premium plan promises to show users "half the ads." Musk did not mention the price of these new packages.
Earlier this month, @aaronp613 discovered references to three separate premium packages in X's code. Separately, Bloomberg also reported that the company is testing multiple paid plans to bring in more revenue.
Musk and others are trying new ways to increase X's revenue. Earlier this week, the company began testing a $1-a-year plan for new users in New Zealand and the Philippines for basic features like posting, likes, and reposts. The social network said the move was to reduce the number of bots on the platform and was not for "profit".
Earlier this month, Reuters reported that advertising revenue has continued to decline since Musk took over. So it's no surprise that Musk is taking steps to bolster subscription revenue.
With former NBCU executive Linda Yaccarino as CEO, the company is trying to attract advertisers and is trying to unveil some metrics that look attractive. Earlier this month, Yacarino said X had about 245 million daily active users and 500 million daily posts.
