The past two years have been the most difficult time for the game industry, especially for practitioners. Tens of thousands of developers have lost their jobs. Even employees of heavyweight companies such as Sony and Microsoft are not immune. According to a recent report from Aftermath, many developers have left the gaming industry to seek other jobs.

The media interviewed a number of game developers affected by layoffs. Most of them did not disclose the companies they previously worked for, but they all expressed similar views on the gaming industry. A developer who was laid off in 2022 said that he went through a difficult time before he successfully launched a web development course. Another level designer, who worked at the now-shuttered Eggnaut studio, chose to further his education and pursue a degree in plant science.

Additionally, many people have moved on to careers in various industries rather than remaining in the gaming industry. Some are working as line cooks, others as bicycle mechanics. But all of the employees who disclosed their previous jobs described working conditions at their previous companies as poor and that they had been in a state of depression about losing their jobs since the layoffs.

They also expressed sadness at not being able to do the things they loved anymore. One developer said: "There is a special joy in doing something you are really good at, and I miss that feeling."

The good thing is that most of the developers who were laid off had good education and work experience, so they were able to find other jobs eventually and not remain unemployed.

According to reports, Sony Interactive Entertainment intends to lay off another employee, while Microsoft has once again laid off 650 people in the gaming department.
