In July, the definition update released by CrowdStrike, a US network security company, was not strictly tested. After its release, it caused a blue screen of death on approximately 8 million computers or servers around the world. This global blue screen incident has had an extremely serious impact, especially when it comes to the aviation system. Delta Air Lines in the United States has suffered huge losses because of this incident.
Microsoft held an impromptu security summit this month, inviting network security software developers, some government officials, and suppliers to discuss the problem and future responses. Similar problems are intolerable to Microsoft, because if Windows is considered an unstable system, other companies may gradually abandon the system.
Microsoft said in a blog post:
We convened a variety of endpoint security vendors and government officials from across the U.S. and Europe, among others, to discuss strategies to increase resiliency and protect our mutual customers’ critical infrastructure.
The ideal solution would be for Microsoft and interested security companies to share how they work, and both or more parties agree to develop a standard to prevent another Blue Screen of Death incident like the one caused by CrowdStrike.
Microsoft has reached the following agreement with the security company:
Performance needs and challenges beyond kernel mode
Tamper protection for security products
Safety sensor requirements
Principles of development and collaboration between Microsoft and the ecosystem
Security design goals for future platforms
Finally, Microsoft also mentioned how security companies can join forces to ensure that things go more smoothly and achieve better results. Microsoft said that the company and other vendors are competitors, but not opponents. The real enemy is hackers.
What Microsoft is talking about here is actually the Microsoft Defender problem, but Microsoft does not think this is a big problem. On the contrary, Microsoft will set standards to ensure that other security software competitors will not sacrifice performance because of competition. That is, third-party security software will provide the same excellent performance as Microsoft Defender on Windows.
