Using ChatGPT may become more expensive in the coming years. The New York Times reported, citing OpenAI internal documents, that OpenAI plans to increase the price of individual ChatGPT subscriptions from $20 per month to $22 per month before the end of this year. By 2029, OpenAI expects to charge $44 per month for ChatGPTPlus.
The aggressive moves reflect investor pressure on OpenAI to narrow its losses. According to the New York Times, OpenAI expects to lose about $5 billion this year, although the company's monthly revenue reached $300 million in August. Expenses such as staffing, office rent and AI training infrastructure are difficult to cut. It is reported that OpenAI spends US$700,000 per day on ChatGPT business alone.
But if the price rises too fast, OpenAI's user growth rate may face a hit. Although ChatGPT currently has approximately 10 million paying users, surveys show that many people already believe that the current price of $20 per month is too high.
