According to news on September 28, Bloomberg News quoted people familiar with the matter as saying on Saturday that the European Union plans to vote on October 4 on whether to impose a 45% tariff on imported electric vehicles made in China. Member states have received draft regulations for the proposed measures, but the new date could still change, the report said.
The vote among EU member states was reportedly slightly delayed as they engage in last-minute negotiations with Beijing to try to find a solution to avoid imposing new taxes.
The European Commission did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.
The European Commission is about to propose a final tariff of up to 35.3% on electric vehicles produced in China, which is higher than the EU's standard 10% car import tariff.
The proposed final tariffs will be decided by a vote among the EU's 27 member states. The tariffs will be implemented by the end of October unless the 15 EU member states, representing 65% of the bloc's population, vote against the imposition.
