In response to recent rumors that the support window for upstream Linux Long Term Support (LTS) kernels may be shortened from six years to two years, Canonical today reaffirmed their ten-year support for Ubuntu Long Term Support releases.

Ahead of the release of Ubuntu 24.04 LTS next April, Canonical today reiterated their commitment to customers to support Ubuntu LTS releases for ten years. Even if the support window for the upstream Linux LTS kernel cycle is shortened, Canonical will insist on supporting Ubuntu LTS for ten years.

Distros like Red Hat Enterprise Linux and other major enterprise Linux distributions may not have their support windows reduced due to changes in the upstream kernel LTS policy.

Regardless, the Ubuntu LTS kernel is not always consistent with the Linux LTS kernel, and Ubuntu LTS dot releases often backport newer kernel versions as part of their hardware enablement (HWE) stack.

Therefore, judging from today's Ubuntu blog post, there is no need to worry about Canonical changing its Ubuntu LTS support policy.
