recently,A high school student in the United States was punished by the school for using AI to assist learning, and his parents took the school to court angrily.According to the student’s mother, Jennifer Harris, her son used AI tools to help collect research materials and develop an outline when completing his history project assignment.

Although they did not directly use AI to write the paper, the school still punished them severely. The student was not only suspended from classes, but also excluded from the National Honor Society.

Ms. Harris noted,At the time of the incident, the school did not explicitly prohibit the use of AI.

The school said the student handbook clearly prohibits the use of "unauthorized technology" and the "unauthorized use or imitation of the language and ideas of others to represent them as one's own work."

It is reported that about half of the US states have issued guidance on the use of AI in education, but policy differences have confused students and teachers.

The Harris family hopes to use the lawsuit to fight for the right of other students to avoid being punished for unclear policies and call on schools to provide clearer guidance on the use of AI.

Harris emphasized,AI is a tool, we need to clarify what can be done and what cannot be done.

After the incident, the school has issued new guidelines for the use of AI. Although the school declined to comment on the ongoing litigation, it will appear in court next week to respond.
