The Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), best known for the AV1 video codec and AVIF image file format, has released the first royalty-free audio specification. The Immersive Audio Model and Format (IAMF) Container Specification, released on Thursday, is AOMedia's first audio container specification and uses the same royalty-free license as AV1.

IAMF aims to provide new immersive audio experiences for a range of applications from AR/VR to traditional broadcast. IAMF is a codec-agnostic container specification that supports spatial audio for all devices, flexible audio transport, and is creator-friendly.
