Have you ever noticed the phenomenon that some people’s hands look smooth and delicate, while some people’s “veins” on the back of their hands are unusually prominent. Regarding blue veins, there are often rumors on the Internet that blue veins on the arms represent internal problems and stasis in the body... After reading this, people can't help but worry about whether there is something wrong with their body, but blue veins on the skin are actually normal and healthy in most cases.

So, why do some people have obvious bulging veins? Which abnormal raised veins need attention? Let us chat together today.

What exactly are the so-called "green veins"?

The blue veins are actually usveins under the skin. Their main task is to transport blood from all parts of the body back to the heart. Veins have thinner walls and are shallower than arteries, making them easier to see.

But why do these veins look cyan under the skin, rather than red?

This is mainly related toLight penetration depth, reflection characteristics and the color perception mechanism of the human eyerelated.

Blue light penetrates the skin to a shallower depth than red light, so the reflection of blue light is less affected at the depth of blood vessels. However, because red light penetrates deeper, it is largely absorbed by deoxygenated hemoglobin, and the reflection is reduced even more. This difference in reflection makes veins appear bluish, with blue and a small amount of green appearing cyan.

Figure 1 simulates the intensity changes reflected from the vein area after short wavelength (450nm, blue light), medium wavelength (550nm, green light) and long wavelength (633nm, red light) pass through the skin.

According to the retinal color perception theory (Retinex theory), the human eye perceives color by comparing the ratio of reflected light in the blood vessel area and surrounding tissue. Because the reduction in red light reflection is more pronounced, the human eye ultimately perceives veins as cyan.

The depth and diameter of the veins also play a role: deeper and larger vessels enhance this blue perception.

In short,The cyan color of veins is the result of a combination of optical properties and visual perception.

Why do some people have bulging veins?

Very obvious?

It is not difficult to find in our lives that some people can see particularly obvious veins on the backs of their hands and arms, while some people can barely see any trace of blood vessels. This difference is related to several factors in the body.

body fat thickness

If a person has less subcutaneous fat, such as a person who is thin or works out regularly, the veins will be more easily visible, especially after exercise, when blood circulation accelerates, venous blood flow increases, and the blood vessels will bulge significantly in a short period of time. For those with thicker subcutaneous fat, the fat layer acts like a "partition", making it difficult for veins to be exposed.

age

The skin of young people has good elasticity, is tight and thick, and even if the blood vessels are slightly bulging, it is not obvious. However, as we age, the skin gradually relaxes and becomes thinner, and the veins lose their coverage and become more prominent. This is also the reason why older people are more likely to be troubled by "blue veins".

As for which one is healthier, it is impossible to judge simply by looking at the "number of veins". It still needs to be judged based on the overall physical condition.

Pay attention to these types of abnormally bulging veins

In most cases, the appearance of blue veins is a normal physiological phenomenon and we do not need to worry. But some may also be a signal for help sent by the body. We can promptly judge whether there are potential health problems based on the location, shape and accompanying symptoms of the veins.

Protruding veins in lower limbs

if foundProtruding veins in lower limbs, especially after standing or sitting for a long time, the veins in the legs are particularly obvious, and each section is uneven in thickness, and may even be accompanied by soreness or fatigue. This may be due toVaricose veinssigns. You should go to a vascular surgery department as soon as possible to rule out chronic venous disease. Failure to improve for a long time may lead to lower limb edema, ulcers and even thrombosis.

Partial blue veins appear

Another thing to pay attention to is the sudden pain, swelling or skin heat in the lower limbs.Partial blue veins appear, especially if it only occurs on one side, this may beacute deep vein thrombosissymptoms; or 6 months after sudden pain, swelling or skin warmth in a certain lower limb,Blue veins appear again in the lower limb on that side, accompanied by heaviness, swelling and pain, skin itching, pigmentation, eczema, etc., should be consideredchronic deep vein thrombosisIt is possible that some people may even have bulging abdominal veins at this time. For these symptoms, you should seek medical attention from a vascular surgery department as soon as possible.

Belly veins bulge

However, if it isBelly veins bulgeThe more common reason is that the two major venous systems, the portal vein and the inferior vena cava, are compressed, which is common inCirrhosis, ascites, inferior vena cava thrombosisetc.

Veins in the neck continue to appear

also,Veins in the neck suddenly appear and continue to appear, possibly withRight heart failure, superior vena cava syndromeRelatedly, the former is usually accompanied by edema of the lower limbs and dyspnea, and the latter is usually accompanied by edema of the upper limbs and face.

In general, if you find abnormally raised veins accompanied by pain, swelling, skin changes and other symptoms, you should seek medical examination as soon as possible to avoid delaying treatment. Healthy veins are "quiet", and any signs of "not quiet" are worthy of vigilance.
