The YouTube Kids mobile app is being redesigned to look and behave more like the standard YouTube app, allowing kids to browse videos in portrait mode for the first time. YouTube Kids will launch on iOS and Android in the coming weeks, while the web and smart TV experiences remain unchanged.
YouTubeKids launched nearly a decade ago, and its look hasn't changed much since its last major redesign in 2017. As the company said last year, it's a major visual and functional update that no longer looks like a toy, with elements coming from recent design changes to the main YouTube app.
At the top, kids will find a newly designed rotating showcase that displays familiar content filters. They're clearly labeled by topic, whether you're looking for games, shows, music, or the Explore tab for education. These buttons take up less horizontal space.
Some other shortcuts that used to be at the top, such as Home, Search, and Profiles, will be moved to the new navigation bar at the bottom. The new "Your Content" page will also be located in this navigation bar and serve as a dedicated entry point to find content you have downloaded, shared, or previously watched. Parental controls and other settings will still remain in the dedicated view, with shortcuts always located next to the Actors button in the upper right corner.
