Geoffrey Hinton, winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics and known as the "Godfather of AI," said that AI has a 10%-20% possibility of leading to the demise of mankind in the next 30 years.During the interview, when the host asked Hinton if there was any change in the possible AI apocalypse and the 10% chance of it happening, Hinton said there was no change, it was still 10% to 20%.
The host said that "the odds have increased," and Hinton went on to say, "If I must say it, look, we have never dealt with anything smarter than us before."
He believes that the establishment of AGI (artificial intelligence) or systems that are smarter than humans may cause the technology to escape human control and pose an existential threat to mankind.
"Because we're in a situation now where most experts in the field think that maybe in the next 20 years we're going to develop AI that's smarter than humans, and that's a very scary idea," Hinton said.
Hinton said bluntly:"Relying solely on the profit motive of large companies does not ensure that they will develop technology safely.",“The only thing that will force these large companies to devote more resources to safety research is government regulation.
