Apple's website still said the first models with next-generation CarPlay support would "be available in 2024," but that didn't happen. It's unclear whether the next generation of CarPlay will be launched. Apple hasn't publicly commented on its plans in a long time, but it has been preparing behind the scenes throughout 2024. For example, in November, some redesigned next-gen CarPlay icons appeared in the code for iOS 18.2.
It wouldn't be surprising if the timeline listed on Apple's website is quietly updated to 2025 in the coming days.
It's unclear whether Apple needs more time to complete development of the next generation of CarPlay, the automaker decided not to adopt the system, or some other reason. Apple first previewed the next generation of CarPlay at the WWDC2022 conference two and a half years ago. Just over a year ago, Aston Martin and Porsche previewed next-generation CarPlay dashboard designs, but neither brand has launched the system.
Apple said other committed automakers include Acura, Audi, Ford, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Land Rover, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Polestar, Renault and Volvo.
Apple has promised that the next generation of CarPlay will be deeply integrated with the dashboard and climate control, supporting multiple displays on the dashboard, a dedicated FM radio application, customizable widgets, and more. The interface will be tailored to each model and carmaker's brand image.
This is how Apple describes it:
The new generation of CarPlay is the ultimate iPhone experience in the car. It provides content for all driving screens, including the dashboard. This ensures a cohesive design experience that is the perfect marriage between your car and your iPhone - each automaker's design expresses your car's personality and brand. Vehicle functions such as radio and climate control can be handled directly via CarPlay. In addition, personalization options from gadgets to choosing a dashboard design make the driver’s experience unique.
The next generation of CarPlay, if launched, is expected to only be used in new cars. It's not an update to the standard CarPlay software.
