According to GDC's annual "State of the Gaming Industry Survey," PC development is more dominant than ever. Like last year, the 2025 GDC Survey surveyed more than 3,000 game developers on their work practices. Topics covered in the survey include which platforms developers are currently developing games for, and which platforms they are most interested in releasing games on in the future.
80% of respondents said they are currently developing PC games, up from 66% last year. At the same time, 74% of respondents expressed interest in the platform, an increase from 62% last year.
While the reason for these increases is unclear, GDC's report suggests it may have something to do with the popularity of Valve's SteamDeck.
"This year's survey didn't single out Steam (or Valve's handheld) as a platform in its own right because it's so central to PC and Mac gaming, but there do seem to be some developers who see it as a distinct platform. For example, when asked what other platforms they were interested in, almost half (44%) of respondents wrote down SteamDeck."
38% of developers said they are currently developing games for PS5, surpassing Xbox Series X/S (34%), followed by development for Android (29%), iOS (28%), Mac (23%), and Nintendo Switch (20%).
Further down the list, 8% of respondents said they are developing games for the newly announced Nintendo Switch 2, which is the same number as last year's survey.
Additionally, more than one in 10 respondents said they had experienced layoffs in the past year.
