Christian Schaller, director of software engineering at Red Hat, outlined some focus areas for Fedora Workstation development this year in a blog post today. In addition, they will hire at least two Linux desktop engineers at Red Hat this year.

2025 projects worth looking forward to in the Fedora field this year include: further embracing artificial intelligence around IBM's Granite open model, continuing work around Wayland, fully supporting high dynamic range (HDR) displays on GNOME, and continuing work on PipeWire.

In addition, Red Hat continues to improve MIPI camera support for modern laptops, further enhance the capabilities of Flatpak sandbox applications, enhance the accessibility of GNOME spaces, and other upstream desktop efforts such as GNOME software and the Firefox browser.

Christian Schaller also noted that they are currently recruiting two desktop engineers to join the Red Hat desktop team. They will work on "GNOME and related technologies". This will not only ultimately help Fedora, but also Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation and upstream GNOME.
