Ionna, an electric vehicle (EV) charging joint venture formed by eight global automakers, said on Wednesday it has officially transitioned from a public beta phase to a nationwide rollout in the United States.Ionna was established in 2023, and its joint venture partners include BMW, General Motors, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, Strantis, Toyota, Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors. The company celebrated the milestone Tuesday with an opening ceremony at its headquarters in Durham, North Carolina.
Ionna already has several new charging stations operational, including in Houston, Texas, and Abilene, Kansas, with six more currently under construction. The company has secured field contracts at more than 100 locations across the United States.
Since late 2024, Ionna has undergone extensive testing with 4,400 charges on 80 different models to ensure seamless compatibility and performance.
Ionna aims to install more than 1,000 charging stations across the United States by the end of 2025, and has set a long-term goal of deploying more than 30,000 charging stations by 2030.
Currently, Tesla accounts for about two-thirds of fast-charging stations in the United States. The charging alliance, made up of eight major auto giants, is expected to reduce reliance on Tesla's charging network.
