Sony Pictures has announced a new "Karate Kid" movie starring Jackie Chan and original series actor Ralph Macchio, expected to be released next year. Two currently confirmed actors announced news of the new film in a new casting video. The film is currently searching for a new lead actor worldwide. This is actually the beginning of a new "movie universe". Both of them have participated in "Karate Kid", but Jackie Chan's domestic movie is called "Kung Fu Dream".

Movie trailer:

The film will be directed by Jonathan Entwistle, director of the series "Not My Way", and written by Rob Lieber, screenwriter of "Peter Rabbit" and "Alexander and His Worst Day".

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story of the new film focuses on "a teenager from China who finds strength and direction through martial arts and a strict but wise mentor." According to the official casting website, the film is looking for an actor who is 15 to 17 years old, fluent in English, Chinese or mixed-race Chinese, and "smart, scrappy, and highly skilled martial arts practitioner."

Ralph Macchio played Daniel LaRusso in the first three "The Kid" films and continues to play the character in the Netflix series' sequel, "Kobra Kai." Jackie Chan played Mr. Han in the 2010 remake of "Kung Fu Dreams," with Will Smith's son Jaden Smith playing the title role.

The cinematic universe including "Cobra" and "The Kid" is known as the "Miyagi Universe" by overseas fans. Miyagi Shigeyoshi is the beloved martial arts master played by Noriyuki Morita in the first "The Kid."

This untitled new movie "The Dragon King" is scheduled to be released on December 13, 2024.
