At the beginning of each month we check out Statcounter’s latest survey results to learn more about how the Windows and desktop browser markets are developing. On the Windows side, we've seen Windows 11 usage climb to all-time highs, even surpassing Windows 10 in some countries. In the desktop browser market, however, things are a little different.
Statcounter reported that in February 2025, Microsoft Edge's share of the desktop browser market reached 13.9%, a record high (an increase of 0.11 percentage points). Year-over-year growth has been fairly limited, with Edge growing just 1.14 percentage points over the past 12 months and remaining below the 14% mark for the full year.
There is no doubt that Google is still the undisputed king of the desktop and mobile markets. Although the U.S. government is pushing Google to sell its Chrome browser business, its overwhelming market share of 65.55% is difficult to shake, and there is no sign that any competitor will approach Google in the short term.
Ranking third in the desktop browser market is Apple's macOSSafari. Its market share is 8.65%, down 0.19% last month. Firefox browser ranked fourth, accounting for 6.36% (+0.1 percentage points). Since Google and Microsoft are shutting down ManifestV2-based extensions such as uBlockOrigin, the Firefox browser's market share is likely to increase in the coming months. In response, Mozilla published a blog post pledging to preserve the MV2 extension to give users more choice and freedom, although it hasn't been able to escape other controversies.
Opera is the fifth most popular desktop browser with a market share of 2.91% (-0.01 percentage points). Unlike Microsoft Edge, which is trying to retain users through unfair means, Opera is trying to re-engage users with some interesting ideas, such as the recently launched Opera Air, which focuses on health and relaxation.
