Analyst Jeff Pu mentioned in the latest report,Both iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will be upgraded to 12GB of memory, which is the largest memory model in Apple’s history. The iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max currently on sale all come with 8GB of memory as standard. Even the cheapest iPhone 16e is equipped with 8GB. As Apple’s AI functions continue to be enriched and improved, the limitations of 8GB of memory will become more and more prominent.
Because when deploying AI products on the device side, whether it is an AI application or various large AI models, there must be enough memory to save the entire model. In addition, the system's basic performance overhead also requires a certain amount of memory. To ensure user experience, it is imperative for Apple to upgrade to 12GB of memory.
However, this upgrade does not include the standard version and iPhone 17 Air. Apple may be considering cost control. This further widens the configuration gap between the standard version and the Pro series. After all, the iPhone 16 series is given 8GB of memory.
In addition, the iPhone 17 Pro series is equipped with the A19 Pro chip. This chip is based on TSMC's 3nm process and has no access to the latest 2nm process. According to reports, due to TSMC's high cost and limited production capacity of 2nm, Apple has postponed the commercialization of 2nm to 2026.
