Walt Disney Animation Studios has ceased production on the Princess Tiana series and has given up on creating original feature-length animated content for the streaming service, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively. A spokesperson confirmed there will be layoffs at the Vancouver studio due to a shift in business strategy. In addition to the Tiana series, the studio will also cancel an unannounced feature-length project that was originally scheduled to go directly to Disney+.
Princess Tiana is Disney's first black princess. She is the heroine in "The Princess and the Frog." Disney regards this work as an important asset of the company. Last year, both Disney's U.S. theme parks renovated attractions with "Tiana" themes. However, despite its best efforts, including several changes to the creative team, "Tiana" ultimately fell short of where the series needed to be due to production costs.
At present, short films are still one of the most popular contents on streaming media platforms. According to Nielsen data, the animated "Brie" authorized by Disney+ (each episode is only 7 minutes) was the most watched program in the United States last year. Disney's self-produced animated short films include "Zootopia+" and "Big Hero Marines!" 》all achieved good results.
