The FreeBSD Foundation, along with the resources invested by AMD, Dell, and the Framework, is working hard to improve FreeBSD laptop support. In recent months, FreeBSD developers have been working hard to improve power management support for modern laptops, with a strong focus on enhancing WiFi driver support as well.

A new status report has been released, the first report on FreeBSD laptop development plans for 2025.

Currently, FreeBSD is still strengthening power management support to improve energy efficiency/save battery, and support 802.11n (WiFi4) and 802.11ac (WiFi5) hardware/drivers. Yes, WiFi7 is currently up to date, but FreeBSD wireless driver support has been lagging behind for years.

The FreeBSD laptop side is also working continuously to provide better webcam support for laptops, and continues to develop the integration of UVC kernel drivers into FreeBSD.
