AMD once again revealed its cooperation with Sony on PS6 development and said that the release of its FSR4 technology is "just the beginning." AMD's latest super-resolution technology, FSR4, was co-developed with Sony, which provided help training the models used in FSR4, including PlayStation Spectral Super-Resolution technology (PSSR).

In a tweet celebrating the release of FSR4 on the In December, Sony confirmed that Project Amethyst was a joint effort between the two companies to develop graphics and gameplay technology based on machine learning.

“FSR4 looks great!” AMD continued. “We are excited to be co-developing with Sony Interactive Entertainment on models for FSR4 super-resolution technology. This is just the beginning. Stay tuned for what’s next!”

Although Sony didn't explicitly mention PS6 development when announcing its partnership with AMD, it's an open secret at this point. Rumors about the two companies collaborating on a next-generation gaming platform had been circulating for nearly a year before Sony announced Project Amethyst.

Sony and AMD have maintained a close working relationship since the PS4 era. Last July, a senior AMD source revealed that AMD was on the verge of financial ruin when Sony came along and put AMD in charge of PS4 production, saving it from bankruptcy.

Presumably, the PS6 will be released sometime in late 2027.
