Tesla is cutting back on Cybertruck production, with output targets lowered on multiple production lines in recent months, according to people familiar with the matter. Multiple production lines at Tesla's Gigafactory in Austin, Texas, are currently operating at a fraction of their early capacity, and some Cybertruck teams have been reduced by more than half.
"It feels like they're screening people. The parking lot is getting emptier," one worker said.
Tesla has transferred some Cybertruck production line employees to the Model Y production line since January, four workers said.
The latest changes follow an earlier adjustment in December, when the company notified workers of revised Cybertruck production plans and also said it planned to lower its production target for the first quarter of 2025.
Cox Automotive estimated in a report this month that Tesla sold just 6,406 Cybertrucks in the first quarter of this year, about half of what it sold in the previous quarter. Although Musk previously said that the company had received more than 1 million Cybertruck pre-orders, as of the time of the recall on March 20, the cumulative delivery volume was less than 50,000.
