The previous console themes launched by PlayStation last year to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the brand were launched on the PS5 platform for a limited time. Sony announced today that these themes will officially return with the system update released globally on April 24.

In the official PlayStation blog, Sony Interactive Entertainment Vice President of Product Management Shuzo Kikuchi revealed that this update will add an “Audio Focus” function. This setting can enhance the sound effects of the gaming environment in headphone mode, making subtle sounds such as footsteps more clearly audible.

Talking about the return of classic themes, Kikuchi admitted that this was entirely due to the strong voice of players: "During the 30th anniversary celebration, we briefly opened a PS5 interface theme that paid tribute to the four generations of PlayStation consoles - including classic visual elements from the original PlayStation, PS2, PS3 and PS4. In view of the enthusiastic response from the community, we are very happy to bring these console-style interface themes back to the PS5 home screen!"
After the update, players can find these themes in the Appearance option of system settings. Home screen theme customization has become a signature feature of PlayStation since the PS3 era.

This return may be just the beginning - players can expect to see more in-depth customization options similar to the 30th anniversary theme (which can change the entire system UI), rather than the few first/second-party game themes currently limited to the welcome menu.
