Former Apple chief design officer Jony Ive has always dreamed of a truly full-screen iPhone, and his wish may become a reality in a few years. The InformationTodayCiting multiple sources, at least one of the new iPhones launched in 2027 will feature an upgraded full-screen display.
The device's front-facing camera and Face ID system will both be located below the screen. 2027 will mark the 20th anniversary of the iPhone, so the all-screen design could arrive at an important moment in the device's history.
As a stepping stone towards full-screen design, the report stated thatThe iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have just a small hole in the upper left corner of the screen to house the front-facing camera, with all the Face ID hardware moved below the screen.
According to reports, the iPhone 18 Pro models will no longer have a pill-shaped punch hole on the top of the screen due to the under-screen Face ID. However, it is unclear whether this means that the Smart Island feature will be deactivated.
The all-screen design is likely to be reserved for high-end iPhones, so it's likely to appear on iPhone 19 Pro models in September 2027.
Display industry analyst Ross Young has also previously claimed that the iPhone 18 Pro will feature under-screen Face ID, so this rumor has now been confirmed by multiple parties. Apple is expected to launch the devices in September 2026.
