Canonical plans for Ubuntu 25.10makeMore system components written in Rust, so far, most discussions have focused onTransitioning to Rust Coreutils"uutils" to replace GNU Coreutils. Today, Canonical also confirmed plans to replace sudo with sudo-rs by default.
The sudo-rs project has been in development for several years and is a Rust-based memory-safe sudo implementation that serves as a drop-in replacement for sudo.
The sudo-rs project is maintained by the non-profit Trifecta Tech Foundation, and today they confirmed that Canonical plans to use sudo-rs by default in Ubuntu 25.10.

They wrote in today's announcement:
Canonical plans to make sudo-rs the default command in Ubuntu 25.10. This will provide time for acceptance testing by end users and ensure that sudo-rs is battle-tested before inclusion in the next Long Term Support (LTS) release: Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, which will be supported for at least 12 years. We look forward to learning from the community on how to further improve sudo-rs.
In turn, sudo-rs developers will work on adding coarse-grained shell escape prevention "NOEXEC", support for controlling AppArmor profiles, sudoedit support, and support for older versions of the Linux kernel.
