Do you remember that a "clean Windows installation" meant no bloatware or third-party applications? Those were great times that we will most likely never get back. Today, even a clean Windows 11 installer comes bundled with a ton of apps, some of which feel a little out of place in a productivity-focused operating system (does Microsoft really think pinning TikTok in Start will improve productivity?)
While there are several ways to ensure that your newly installed Windows system is not bloated (you can use clever zone tricks or more radical methods of modifying the Windows image), you may still find some uninvited applications on your system. According to WindowsLatest reports, some Windows users have encountered this situation.
The blog said their computers and virtual machines suddenly had HPSmart installed, an application for managing HP printers and other peripherals. Strangely, none of these devices are or were ever connected to any HP accessories or accounts.
A Microsoft spokesperson said the company is aware of the complaint and is investigating the situation. In the meantime, if you suddenly find the HPSmart app on your Windows 10 or 11 PC, don’t hesitate to clear it. Right-click on the intruder and select "Uninstall".
It's worth noting that this program appears to come from a legitimate source, so its presence doesn't mean your computer is infected with malware or adware. However, the latter is a controversial topic.
Interestingly, this isn't the first time we've seen Microsoft products do strange things. A few months ago, Microsoft Edge users discovered that the browser installed the Google Docs extension without warning or asking for permission. Whether intentional or not, such an approach will always trigger the anger of consumers, who will definitely attack Microsoft because of the uninvited HP smart applications.
