For Mac users, especially those who frequently use external hard drives,Microsoft has brought good news: OneDrive for Mac now supports removable hard drives, and users can sync files to external hard drives.Microsoft introduced external hard drive support for OneDrive for Mac in early 2025, but it was initially limited to hard drives detected as non-removable by macOS.
After receiving a lot of feedback from users about this limitation, Microsoft is now working on fixing the issue of being unable to sync files to removable hard drives.
External hard drive support works in OneDrive the same way as syncing to internal storage,If the drive is unplugged, OneDrive will stop syncing and alert users with an error message. To resume syncing, simply reconnect the drive and restart OneDrive.
If users want to sync OneDrive to an external hard drive, the hard drive needs to be formatted as APFS (Apple File System) and protected through FileVault (read-only, network, and isolated hard drives are not supported).
In addition, users need to install macOS 15.0 or higher and OneDrive 25.097 or higher. This feature is currently only available to internal test users and is expected to be rolled out to more users soon.
Microsoft also noted that the external hard drive support feature does not allow users to move the drive between different devices, so users will need to reset OneDrive sync every time they connect the drive to a new Mac.
