According to foreign media reports, TSMC announced in May 2020 that it would invest US$12 billion to build its first wafer fab in Arizona, USA. The process technology has been upgraded from the originally planned 5nm to 4nm. In December last year, it also announced that it would build a second wafer fab in Arizona. After completion, it will use the 3nm process technology to OEM wafers for relevant customers. The investment in the two fabs is close to US$40 billion.

Since the major customer of TSMC's advanced process technology is Apple, they are building a wafer foundry for 5nm and 4nm process technology in Arizona, and they are expected to produce a large number of products for Apple.

Judging from the latest news announced by Apple, they will be the largest customer of TSMC’s Arizona factory.

When Apple announced that it was expanding its advanced chip packaging cooperation with Amkor in the United States and would be Amkor's first and largest customer of the factory under construction in Peoria, Arizona, it revealed that they would also be the largest customer of TSMC's Arizona factory.

TSMC's first factory in Arizona has started construction in 2021. The first EUV lithography machine has been installed in August this year. Mass production is planned in 2024, with a monthly production capacity of 20,000 wafers. This means that some of the chips designed by Apple will be manufactured by TSMC’s Arizona factory as soon as next year.

When announcing the expansion of its advanced chip packaging cooperation with Amkor in the United States, Apple also disclosed that the chips Amkor packages for them at their Peoria, Arizona, factory are produced at the nearby TSMC foundry.
