TikTok is adding new features to its app to allow songwriters to showcase their work. The features, currently in beta, include a "Songwriters" tab and a new tab to showcase their music. This can help songwriters better market themselves to potential clients.
The company said only a limited number of publishing partners and songwriters will have access to the new label and music highlights sections. Currently, songwriters and publishers who want to join the program must join a waiting list.
TikTok said it surveyed more than 870 songwriters and interviewed some to understand their needs in building a profile on social media and creating monetization opportunities. The company also noted that an independent survey showed more than half of songwriters use social media like TikTok to boost their profile. The apps owned by ByteDance said the results of the surveys prompted their decision to develop the features.

“We are passionately committed to supporting songwriters on TikTok, which is why we built these tools to celebrate and elevate songwriters and their work on our platform,” said TikTok’s head of global music publishing licensing and partnerships.
“TikTok is unique in that it gives songwriters a way to showcase their musical work alongside their own content, helping them tell the story of their music, craft and life, and grow their profile and audience on TikTok, just like thousands of artist creators already do.”
It’s worth noting that Spotify has been rolling out features over the years to help songwriters highlight their work. Last year, Tidal not only highlighted the work of songwriters, but also launched a tool to track their royalty income and manage the works for which they own creative rights.
Although TikTok decided to shut down its music streaming service TikTok Music last year, the platform remains crucial for users to discover new music and artists to promote their work. Earlier this year, the company released a tool called TikTok for Artists that allows artists to monitor their activities and the performance of their work.
