Thanks to changes merged this week, designed specifically for the Raspberry PiUbuThe ntu 25.10 image will be much more streamlined than the current Ubuntu Linux version for the Raspberry Pi. The Ubuntu desktop image for the Raspberry Pi single-board computer will be based on a "desktop minimal" seed rather than a "full" desktop image.

Switching the Raspberry Pi image to a minimal base version of the Ubuntu desktop means that some applications (such as GNOME Calendar, Deja Dup, File Roller, GNOME Snapshot, LibreOffice, Rhythmbox, Shotwell, Simple Scan, Thunderbird, Totem, Transmission, etc.) no longer work out of the box,This currently saves approximately 777MB of space.

Of course, for users who need specific applications, they can still be easily installed later from the Ubuntu package archive. Some desktop users may miss the likes of LibreOffice and Thunderbird, and ditching Simple Scan, the Transmission BitTorrent client, and others by default is arguably a long overdue move.

The current Ubuntu 25.04 Raspberry Pi image is 2.9GB in size, while the Ubuntu 24.04.2 LTS Raspberry Pi desktop image is 2.6GB in size. Canonical engineer Dave Jones detailed the streamlining of Ubuntu 25.10 Raspberry Pi images in yesterday's Ubuntu Foundation team notes.
